Energy

BIERI components are used in a wide variety of energy generation applications. These hydraulic systems are essential for performing mechanical work under high reliability requirements, safely controlling processes or efficiently producing energy sources. Our components are also used in various hydraulic safety systems, where they ensure efficient and reliable operation.

Oil and gas industry and geothermal energy

Drill rigs and underwater technology: hydraulic systems drive drill rigs, grippers and underwater tools that operate under extreme thermal conditions and vibrations. The use of high-pressure hydraulics up to 1000 bar / 15000 psi reduces power peaks for the provision of the required energy, making the energy supply leaner and more efficient.

Wind energy

Pitch control in wind turbines is performed using hydraulic systems. These enable the individual rotor blades to be precisely synchronised and adapted to different wind speeds. This regulates the output and makes a significant contribution to the turbine's safety system.

The braking systems are used to safely stop the rotors during maintenance or in stormy wind conditions. The safety system for generating energy from wind power is positioned in the nacelle in a space-optimised and energy-efficient manner thanks to the use of high-pressure hydraulics.

Hydropower plants and thermal power plants

High-pressure hydraulics are used to control water locks and turbines to regulate the flow of water and energy production. The hydrodynamic turbine bearings are also operated using high-pressure hydraulics.

Maintenance and repair work: hydraulic systems are used to lift plant components such as turbine blades or butterfly valves to facilitate maintenance work.

Positioning parabolic reflectors

The solar power plant's sunrays are concentrated thanks to the high-pressure hydraulics, which ensure the positioning and alignment of the large parabolic mirrors in all weathers.   Our durable components impress with their reliability and significantly minimise the need for maintenance and replacement.

The high-pressure hydraulics also ensure that the hydraulic system can be operated with sufficient power reserves in an energy-efficient manner, helping to minimise energy consumption.

Alternative fuels

Hydraulic systems for the energy sources hydrogen, methanol and ammonia often require high-pressure hydraulics to keep the fuels in the desired state. The hydraulic system generates the required pressure, takes over the control and is the underlying safety system in the application.

To increase the energy density when storing hydrogen, ammonia or methanol, the energy source is compressed using hydraulic systems up to 700 bar, depending on the application. The safety systems often require a safety factor of up to 30% to take account of safety aspects, temperature influences or service life, which may necessitate the use of high-pressure hydraulics of up to 1000 bar.
